Achieving Your Academic Goals in 2021

Achieving Your Academic Goals in 2021 By Maria Shelley ‘24

As we begin the new school year, one of your goals may be to improve your grades. This year has been especially challenging in distance learning and requires even more focus and time management which have been major adjustments. In 2021, academics may be at the forefront of your goals for the year. We’ve prepared some tips to help you start the school year off on the right foot.

Make a Running To-do List

Making a to-do list sounds like such a simple action, but it is one of the most effective ways to stay organized. Whether you jot it down on a piece of paper or use an app such as Google Keep, visualizing your assignments is so helpful when practicing time management. As the week goes on, add assignments, study sessions, and other to-dos to your list so you do not have to constantly refer back to Schoology. A to-do list allows students to visualize their assignments in order to plan their homework and study sessions

accordingly. By always having an idea of what needs to be done, the chance of forgetting to complete something is decreased. And we can’t forget the accomplished feeling of checking something off of your to-do list right?

Don’t be Afraid to Ask for Help

Teachers are there for you to ask questions so take advantage of the opportunity to gain more information if you need it. It is especially important to ask even more questions during distance learning when you are not able to meet with them in person. Attend office hours if they are

offered as you can usually get your questions answered or one on one help with assignments. Also, don’t forget to utilize resources such as Google chats to connect with your teachers.

Practice Good Study Skills

Practicing good study skills is critical to getting good grades on tests and quizzes. An easy yet impactful study skill is to not only review, but to rewrite your notes. Writing important information down improves recall, focus, and forces your brain to engage in the task at hand. Another great way to incorporate variety into your study habits is to use technology such as the Quizlet app to practice vocabulary terms with practice tests, games, and digital flashcards. During distance learning, forming a study group with friends via FaceTime or Zoom is a great way to interact while reviewing for that upcoming science test.

Hopefully these tips will help you achieve your academic goals in 2021! And remember, the best approach you can have is to always put in 100% effort!
