Nail Ideas for Formal

Nail Ideas for Formal

By Samantha Lynch ‘23

Whether you are getting your nails professionally done or doing it at home, here are some simple ideas for your manicure.

Part I: Go on theme

This year’s theme ‘Fly Me to the Moon' can be reflected on your nails. Subtle moons and stars will be perfect. If you still want to match the theme but do not want patterns, opt for darker cool colors such as blues, blacks, and purples.

  1. Star Nails

Star nails are probably one of the easier patterns. First paint your nails a dark shade. Let them dry and then add some white flecks. These nails can be as simple or as detailed as needed. You can even add planets for an extraterrestrial vibe.

  1. Nebula Nails

This picture probably gives you flashbacks to 2016 when the galaxy print was inescapable. To avoid the dated look, just keep the pattern simple and create an ombre effect using a makeup sponge. Use sparkly nail polish for a cosmic effect.

  1. Moon Nails

If you want to embrace the theme, moon nails are the way to go. You can draw crescent moons on your nails with a nail art tool, use moon nail stickers or gems, or even recreate moon phases.

Part 2: Color coordination

  1. Patterned Nails

Patterned nails, especially those with squiggles and swirls are very popular right now. They have a playful vibe and look great in bright colors.

  1. Different Colored Nails

This is a great technique to try at home if you are not the best at nail design. You can have each finger be a different color, all be the same color except for one, have alternating colors, or have different colors on each hand. Be sure to pick a color palette that is right for your overall look.

  1. Colored Tips

Another popular trend at the moment is colored tips. They are like French tips but with a whimsical twist. Each nail can be a different color, or they can all be the same color.

  1. Ombre Nail Art

Ombre nail art can be done at home with a makeup sponge. Small details can be added atop the ombre design.

  1. Nail Stickers/ Gems

If you still want intricate designs but don't have the skills or time, check out nail decals. All you need to do is paint your nails a solid color and place some of them on. You will have nails that look like they were done at an upscale salon!

  1. Subtle patterns

Use a nail tool to draw small patterns such as plants, stars, hearts, or dots on your nails to give them a unique look.

  1. Classic Solid colors

You cannot go wrong with solid colors. They are a classic staple. Be sure to choose the right color, but also consider whether you want shiny or matte nails.

  1. Last Minute…Press On Nails

If you don't have time to do your nails before formal try out some press-ons. They are a great last minute alternative.

Finally, just remember to be yourself and express your radiant personality!
