Mrs. Murphy’s Romance Book Recs
By Jazmine Moran ‘24
As the Valentine’s season of love comes to an end, you may be looking for a good romantic read. Mrs. Murphy, our wonderful librarian, has five book recs to finish off the month. Whether you are a hopeless romantic or are simply looking for an interesting read, all of these books have something for everyone.
#1. The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
The Night Circus, Amazon
If you are looking for a fantasy novel with a phantasmagorical (a form of horror theater) fairy tale, an ahistorical Victorian London setting, and a magical circus, check out The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. This story follows the lives of Celia Bowen and Marco Alisdair, two of the circus’ young protégés, as they fall in love despite being magically bound to a deadly competition, the rules of which, neither understand. According to Mrs. Murphy, this book has “beautiful language” and is wonderfully written. Check it out on Sora.
#2. The Traitor’s Kiss by Erin Beaty
The Traitor's Kiss, Amazon
If you are looking for a book about secret identities, espionage, lies, intrigue, and a tempestuous romance, check out The Traitor's Kiss by Erin Beaty. This book tells the story of Sage Fowler, a girl with a sharp tongue and an unruly temper who gets deemed unfit for marriage and is apprenticed to a matchmaker. In the words of Mrs. Murphy, this book has a great “storyline” and makes her “go all woozy.” Check it out in the library if you are interested.
#3. Pride by Ibi Zoboi
Pride, Amazon
If you are interested in a modern and funny retelling of Pride and Prejudice, you should check out Pride by Ibi Zoboi. It follows the life of Zuri Benitez, a Brooklyn born Afro-Latina, as she navigates the ideas of gentrification and love, as well as her own prejudices when a rich, black family from Manhattan purchases and remodels the old run-down mansion across the street from Zuri’s family. Check it out in the library.
#4. Cloudwish by Fiona Wood
Cloudwish, Amazon
If you are looking for a high school romance set in Australia, then you should check out Cloudwish by Fiona Wood. This story follows the life of Van Uoc Phan, a shy, reserved, young, immigrant girl, as she attracts the attention of her crush, Billy Gardiner, and learns to deal with the new unwelcome spotlight that has been placed on her as well as the idea that wishes, whether magical or not, might be real. If you are interested in this book, you can check it out at the library.
#5. Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo
Last Night at the Telegraph Club, Amazon
If you are interested in a story of love and duty set in San Francisco’s Chinatown during the Red Scare, you should check out Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo. It follows the story of seventeen-year-old Lily Hu as she falls in love with Kathleen Miller and risks it all, not only as a Chinese American woman during the Red Scare paranoia, but also as a lesbian woman in 1954, a time in America during which it was not safe for two girls to fall in love. If you are interested in this book, you can check it out in the library.
