  National French Week Recap!  By Paloma Sanchez ‘24  From November 3 to November 9, Mercy held national French Week with a bunch of fun activities and dress-up days! Because of the many activities, let's recap this week!  The Louvre French Week theme  This year’s theme for National French Week was inspired by the Louvre: Art from the Francophone World . Students in French class have made posters about French art pieces that are displayed in the Louvre.   Featured Clubs #3 By Samantha Lynch ‘23   So far we have covered a small fraction of Mercy’s Clubs. If you are interested in your club being featured in the next edition, fill out this google form . Anyways, in this week’s installment of Featured Clubs, we will highlight the Love, You Club and the Philosophers Club! Love, You Club The Love, You Club is a new club this year. President Mika Omail ‘23 shared that the idea for this club came when “m y friend came up to me and asked if I wanted to make a club with her. I agreed and pitched the idea of making gifts for kids sick in hospitals as I was already working on that project by myself. Now we have an amazing group helping us make small gifts like rings and bracelets to cheer up others.” This club is a great way to spread kindness and help others.  The club meets in Mr. D’s room during collaboration.   The Truth on The Winds of Truth By Matea Houle ‘24   Lillian Shapona, or Lilly Mae, is a sophomore at Mercy with her very first original book being published this December. I’m sure we’ve all seen her posters around campus, but what is the book about? I interviewed Lilly to ask her why and get the details on her big accomplishment.  About the book I started off with the basics. I asked Lilly to tell us about the audience, the plot, or any messages within the book. She told us it was a middle-grade fantasy-adventure story. “It’s pretty fun, lots of swords and magic,” she says. “You get to see the character development of the female protagonist.   Service Spotlight:  St. Anthony’s By Maria Shelley ‘24   Last Friday Ms. Hefflefinger’s 7th-period religion class of sophomores ventured to St. Anthony’s in San Francisco for a day of service. Located in the Tenderloin district of the city, St. Anthony’s is a non-profit organization with the goal to “feed, heal, shelter, clothe, lift the spirits of those in need, and create a society in which all persons flourish” (stanthonysf.org). Every day St. Anthony’s serves over 2,000 meals from their Dining Room kitchen. In addition to their dining room, St. Anthony’s offers a Free Clothing Program which helps 10,000 people each year to receive high-quality clothing at no charge.  Below: Students listen to a service presentation before starting their volunteer work.   What is Veterans Day? By Flora Gamba ‘23   Thursday, November 11, 2021 is Veterans Day. The day serves as a way to remember those who have fought for our country. Though we celebrate the holiday every year, many do not know why or how this day came to be.  US in WWI, Google Images Veterans Day was first established following World War I. The war officially ended on June 28, 1919 following the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in Paris. However, many consider November 11, 1918 to be the end of the war. On that day, at exactly 11 o’clock, fighting stopped between the Allied nations and Germany. The following year, in 1919, President Woodrow Wilson declared that November 11 would be celebrated as Armistice Day. Originally, the day was to be commemorated with parades, public meetings, and a suspension of business starting at 11:00 a.m. However, it wasn’t until May 13, 1938 that November 11th became a legal holiday in the United States.   Thanksgiving Crafts By Madison Hong ‘23   Halloween has gone and Christmas decorations are up but we cannot forget Thanksgiving! Arts and crafts are a great way to bond with family or have a little me time while decorating the space around you. Google Images   Mosaic Leaves This fun (and aesthetically pleasing) craft is simple and all you need is colored and white paper, scissors, pencils, leaves, and glue. Trace your leaves, using a pencil, on a piece of white paper. Cut your colored paper into small pieces and glue them on your piece of white paper inside of your outline. Lastly, cut out your leaves, following your outline, and place your leaves around your house.   Paper Turkey  Thanksgiving is a time to eat turkey and make one too! For this craft, you need a toilet paper roll, colored paper, scissors, glue, and this template (googly eyes are optional).
