Spring Cleaning Tips and Tricks

Spring Cleaning Tips and Tricks

By Matea Houle ‘24

Spring cleaning! We all hate the work but love the end results. Putting in effort to make your room cozy,

your kitchen spotless, or your bathroom shining is super satisfying. But not everyone is into cleaning for

hours straight. So here are some fun tips and tricks to make spring cleaning quick, easy, and maybe

even a little fun.

1 - Make a list!

Making a list is the simplest way to start any task. Sure, you might be able to remember everything

in your head, but the satisfaction of checking off a box or crossing something out is more inspiring

than you think. Use the notes app on your phone, write it down on paper, or make a full bullet journal.

Creating a list can center your thoughts and give you direction for your time of cleaning.

2 - Stainless steel cleaner

Stainless steel. Yeah right. We all have that one pan or the oven that needs to be cleaned. To

make your appliance shine, combine 1 teaspoon of dish soap with 1 quart of hot water. Use a

microfiber cloth to wipe it down, rinse with hot water, and dry. New and shiny!

3 - Cleaning makeup tools

It’s been a while since you cleaned your makeup brushes. Don't worry, me too. It might be a hassle,

but it’s worth it to keep your face free of bacteria and your products to the best quality. For brushes,

rub the bristles with a few drops of baby shampoo or dawn dish soap and rinse upside down under

warm running water. Lay them flat on a towel to dry. For beauty blenders, run it under water and

squeeze it out just to get it damp. Put it in a bowl filled with water, so the blender is a quarter to halfway

covered, and microwave for 30 seconds (this kills the built-up bacteria). Then take it out of the microwave

with caution as it will be hot, rub face soap on it, and rinse and squeeze it out. Also lay it on a towel to dry.

4 - Easy microwave cleaner

Most families have a microwave, and most of those microwaves may or may not be slightly gross. Never

fear! This solution is simple and handles most of the mess for you. Fill a large (microwave safe, duh) bowl

with 1 cup of water. Add either a chopped lemon, lime, orange, or 3-5 tablespoons of vinegar. Microwave for

several minutes, until the solution is boiling, and the window is steamy. Let it cool for five minutes, open the door,

and wipe down the inside of the microwave.

5 - Magic erasers

Mr. Clean lives up to his apt name with this multi-purpose sponge-like cleaner. Thank you, king. Run

it under water, squeeze it out, and wipe down virtually any dirty surface to see the results. This product

is highly recommended for grime on walls and in bathrooms. Get it in sponge or sheet type. Whatever

you do, just get it. It’s magic.

6 - Listen to music!

The simplest solution of them all: music! It makes the time go faster and makes you

happier. Grab a speaker and connect your phone, play it on your tv, or just put on

headphones and blast your favorite playlist. Go crazy, listen to cleaning themed music,

if that’s even a real genre. Spring cleaning may be boring, but it’s worth it, so you may

as well crank up those tunes and get to work.
