Featured Clubs #2

By Samantha Lynch ‘23

In the previous installment of this article series, we covered three of Mercy’s clubs. Mercy has over thirty clubs so we have many more to cover. The clubs featured this week are the In the Criminal Mind’s Club and The Literary Appreciation Club.

In The Criminal’s Mind Club

Criminal Minds Club Meeting, Emma Hanson

The In the Criminal Mind’s club is a club for students with interests in true crime. Many students at Mercy have this interest as there are around fifty members in the club. The club was founded by Emma Hanson ‘23, and she wanted to “create a club with a fun environment where one of Mercy student’s interests is discussed”. The club meets during collaboration and the moderator is Ms. Oudiz. During their meetings, they play crime games, watch documentaries or TV shows, and talk about cases.

Literary Appreciation club

The Literary Appreciation Club was started by three juniors: Mikayla Massucco ‘23, Flora Gamba ‘23, and Samantha Lynch ‘23. They wanted to create a nontraditional, more laid back book club that is a safe space for all. They meet during collaboration in the library and are a perfect option for someone who does not want an intense club. A typical meeting includes a book discussion, an activity loosely based on the book, and then voting on the next meeting’s book. Reading the books is optional as many students may not like the book or are too busy to read it in the specified timeframe. Discussions about the book are not as organized as those in English classes, and allow you to share your honest thoughts about the book or anything reading-related. At their last meeting they discussed Hold Back The Tide by Melinda Salisbury and played a murder mystery game. They are currently reading If I Stay by Gayle Forman and plan to discuss it at their next club meeting.

The Club is hosting a learning hour opportunity on November third during academic collaboration in the library to discuss the novel What Kind Of Girl by Alyssa Sheinmel. This book discusses dating violence, mental illness, and drug use in a high school setting. They will be connecting the book’s themes to the critical concern of women. (TW: domestic/dating violence, drug use, eating disorders, homophobia, self harm, and mental illness; take your boundaries into consideration before attending this event) Refer to Schoology for more information regarding the event.
