The Mercy Tea

The Mercy Tea

By Madison Hong ‘23

Last Sunday was Mercy’s annual Mercy Tea. Previously known as the Mother Daughter Tea, this event has been a tradition of Mercy for almost 100 years. It all started with a simple cup of tea…

History of the Mercy Tea

During her last moments, Catherine McAuley told the Sisters to have a good cup of tea together as a community, after she had gone. Mercy Burlingame has been hosting a Mercy Tea for it’s students since the 1940s or maybe even earlier. The Mercy Tea honors the Sisters of Mercy and Catherine McAuley by bringing us together with our mothers/guardians to enjoy “a comfortable cup of tea.

The Event

This year Mercy students and their mothers/guardians got to enjoy the tradition of the Mercy Tea despite the heavy rain and fierce wind. Tea, cookies, lemon bars, brownies, and cupcakes were served. There were even homemade vegan and gluten free cupcakes that were surely enjoyed. Mercy Dads helped to prepare the event and were walking around to ensure everyone was enjoying the Mercy Tea. Upstairs there was a professional photographer for mothers and daughters to take pictures together.

One of the most exciting parts of the Mercy Tea was the raffle. The prizes included baskets from Kate Spade and Lululemon. The most exciting basket was the Winter Formal Basket. It included one Winter Formal ticket, $50 to Nordstrom, $50 to Sephora, $25 to Lovisa, and $10 In & Out gift cards. The lucky winner was all set with her ticket, dress, make-up, jewelry, and even food for after!
