  Sports Report 10/18-10/22 By Nini Pearl ‘24   This was an eventful week for sports! Tennis, water polo, golf, and volleyball all had games.  On Tuesday October 19, there were tennis, water polo, and volleyball games. Tennis had a match against the Nueva School on the 19th. Varsity players Maria Shelley ‘24 and Sabrina Jarman ‘22 were both victorious, taking both of their matches into a third set tiebreaker. The water polo team took on Terra Nova. They battled and ended up losing 3-18. Freshman volleyball won two straight sets against Notre Dame San Jose. JV volleyball pushed Notre Dame San Jose to a third set, and won 2-1 sets. Varsity volleyball took care of Notre Dame San Jose in two straight sets. Whether you’re a fan of horror movies, ghost stories, dressing up, or simply enjoy trick-or-treating, Halloween is a favorite holiday for many. What most don’t know; however, is the true history and origins of Halloween and the way that the holiday became what it is today. Samhain Samhain Altar, Google Images Halloween is descended from the Ancient Celtic tradition of Samhain (SAH-win). The pagan holiday is typically celebrated from October 31 to November 1. Though it represents welcoming the harvest and the darkest months of the year, many believe that the barriers between the physical and spirit world break during the holiday. The Mercy Tea By Madison Hong ‘23  Last Sunday was Mercy’s annual Mercy Tea. Previously known as the Mother Daughter Tea, this event has been a tradition of Mercy for almost 100 years. It all started with a simple cup of tea…   History of the Mercy Tea During her last moments, Catherine McAuley told the Sisters to have a good cup of tea together as a community, after she had gone. Mercy Burlingame has been hosting a Mercy Tea for it’s students since the 1940s or maybe even earlier. The Mercy Tea honors the Sisters of Mercy and Catherine McAuley by bringing us together with our mothers/guardians to enjoy “a comfortable cup of tea . ”   The Event This year Mercy students and their mothers/guardians got to enjoy the tradition of the Mercy Tea despite the heavy rain and fierce wind. Tea, cookies, lemon bars, brownies, and cupcakes were served. There were even homemade vegan and gluten free cupcakes that were surely enjoyed.   Freshman End of 1st Quarter Celebration By Samantha Lynch ‘23   Mercy’s class of 2025 has made it through their first quarter of high school! Starting high school (especially after a life-changing pandemic) was a big transition for many of our freshmen and it is important to celebrate this accomplishment. During this week’s C-day, freshmen reunited with their Link Crews and their Link Crew leaders to participate in games. Freshmen enjoy their bagel breakfast. The day started off at 9AM where the students were given a free breakfast of bagels with cream cheese and fruit. They then did a reflection activity with the other students. Afterwards, the advisories competed in a competition in which they would link hands and see which advisory could get the hula hoop through the fastest. Afterwards, the crews competed in a ‘telephone charades’ game. When reflecting on their experience at Mercy, the freshmen said that they tried new things such as talking to new people, joining a club...
